Common Questions

The things parents ask us most.

Honest answers to the questions that come up before, during, and after the Ritual.

Section One

Recognizing eczema.

Eczema is usually dry, rough, itchy, or irritated, and it often comes and goes. In babies, it may show up on the cheeks and scalp. As children get older, it often appears in the creases of the elbows and knees. It can look and feel different from child to child, and it can look different depending on skin tone, which we cover in the next question.

Only a pediatrician or pediatric dermatologist can tell you for certain. If you are not sure what you are seeing, or if your child’s skin is worsening, it is worth asking about.

Yes. Eczema can look different on Brown and Black skin, and more broadly in skin of color. That is one reason it may be missed or misunderstood.

On lighter skin, eczema often appears red or pink. On Brown and Black skin, the same irritation may appear ashen, gray, purple, reddish-brown, or darker than the surrounding skin, with less visible redness. Sometimes it is easier to feel than to see, showing up as rough, bumpy, dry, itchy, or tight texture before there is an obvious change in color.

After a flare settles, Brown and Black skin may hold visible marks longer. An area may look darker or lighter than the surrounding skin for weeks or months.

If you are unsure what you are seeing on your child’s skin, or if the skin is worsening rather than settling, check with your pediatrician or a pediatric dermatologist.

Often, yes, though they can take time.

After dryness, irritation, or a flare, Brown and Black skin may be left with areas that look darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. This is a common change in color after irritation, and it does not always mean the skin is still flaring.

During this time, gentle and consistent care gives the barrier the support it needs while skin settles. These changes can take weeks or months to settle on their own.

If a mark is spreading, raised, changing quickly, or you are unsure what it is, check with your pediatrician or a pediatric dermatologist.

Section Two

For your child.

No. Brown Babee is for every child with dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin. If your child’s skin is reactive, this Ritual was made with them in mind, no matter their skin tone.

From the beginning, we were intentional about building Brown Babee with the perspectives of families whose children reflect the world we live in every day. Through our founding focus group, we listened closely to women caring for children across a wide range of skin tones, textures, sensitivities, and lived experiences.

That fuller view helped us create a Ritual with more thoughtful standards, not a narrower audience.

Every shade. Every stage. Every family.

Dermatologist tested. The Ritual is formulated for children with sensitive and eczema-prone skin, from infancy through adolescence. It is gentle enough for delicate baby skin and effective enough for older children. For infants, or if your child has a diagnosed skin condition or specific concerns, consult your pediatrician before use.

The same three products carry a child from the early months into the school years. What changes is how much you use and how often, not which products you reach for.

Yes. The Ritual was formulated for dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin, and every formula is dermatologist tested.

It is daily cosmetic care rather than medicine. It does not diagnose eczema and it is not a substitute for what a doctor prescribes. When skin is scratched or visibly irritated, the Ritual shifts into the Flare Protocol and the Barrier Nourishing Oil is used on its own. Read the full Flare Protocol →

If your child’s skin is worsening rather than settling, or you see signs of infection such as increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever, check with your pediatrician or a pediatric dermatologist.

Yes, with care. On calm skin, use the full Ritual as a daily routine. When skin is scratched or visibly irritated, pause the Serum and the Moisturizer and use the Barrier Nourishing Oil on its own until skin feels comforted and intact. If skin looks infected, for example weeping, crusting, spreading redness, or your child seems unwell, that is a moment to see your pediatrician or a dermatologist rather than reach for a skincare routine. The Ritual is daily care, not a treatment for medical concerns. Read the full Flare Protocol →

Yes. The Ritual is formulated for dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin, and a diagnosis is not required.

Plenty of children have skin that is dry, reactive, or easily irritated without ever being given a name for it. Some are too young for a clear picture. Some have skin that only turns difficult in winter, or after a bath, or when something changes at home.

If your child’s skin is dry, reactive, or uncomfortable, the Ritual was built for that. If you are unsure what you are seeing, a pediatrician can help you understand it.

That is a question for your child’s pediatrician or pediatric dermatologist, and we would encourage you to ask it.

Many families use something prescribed by their doctor alongside a daily barrier routine, but the timing, the order, and the areas of application depend on what has been prescribed and why. Your doctor knows your child’s skin and their care plan best.

What we can tell you is what the Ritual is. It is a daily cosmetic barrier routine, formulated without steroids, fragrance, or nut oils, and designed to support the skin barrier between flares. Bring that to the conversation and your doctor can tell you how it fits.

No. If your child has a diagnosis or a prescribed routine, keep following your doctor's guidance. The Ritual is gentle daily barrier care that can sit alongside that on the calm days, and we always suggest checking with your pediatrician or dermatologist about how it fits your child's specific needs.

Consistent daily barrier care supports the skin's outer layer, and a well-supported barrier tends to feel more comfortable and hold moisture better over time. That is the honest goal of the Ritual: steady support, day after day. Skin will still have its ups and downs, and daily care does not change that. What we aim for is skin that is better supported on the calm days, so it has a stronger foundation to work from.

Section Three

About the Ritual.

Your skin's outer layer works a little like a wall, holding moisture in and keeping irritants out. On dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin, that wall has gaps, so skin loses water, feels tight or itchy, and reacts more easily. Barrier care means supporting that outer layer every day by replenishing the fats and moisture it depends on, so it can do its job of keeping skin comfortable and calm. The whole Ritual is built around this one idea.

Most care for eczema-prone skin responds to the flare, the visible and uncomfortable moments. We built the Ritual for the quieter days in between, when skin looks calm but the barrier is still doing quiet work. Caring for skin consistently on those days is how it stays comfortable and resilient over time. This is not a promise that flares will not come. The difference is, when they do, you are not beginning from zero. This is the heart of what we mean by Raise Resilienceâ„¢.

Most families see calmer, more comfortable skin within the first 14 to 30 days of consistent use.

Barrier resilience builds over weeks rather than overnight, so what matters most is repetition. That is why we ask for the calm days rather than only the difficult ones. Flares can still happen.

If your child’s skin is worsening rather than settling, check with your pediatrician or a pediatric dermatologist.

Multi-Benefit Care is the name for our complete Ritual, the three products designed to work together for dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin. Rather than a single product doing one thing, each product contributes a different kind of barrier care, and together they cover more than any one product could on its own. The Barrier Boosting Serum calms and preps, the Barrier Nourishing Oil nourishes and supports, and the Barrier Repair Moisturizer replenishes and seals. That is the multi-benefit idea: to calm, nourish, and protect in one simple daily Ritual. You can shop it as the complete Multi-Benefit Care set, or build up to it one product at a time with the pieces your child needs most.

Section Four

Using the Ritual.

Less than you might expect, and it varies by product.

The Serum goes on clean, dry skin in the evening, gently massaged into dry or irritated areas. The Oil is two or three drops warmed between your fingertips and pressed in after the Serum has absorbed. The Moisturizer is a small amount smoothed across the face and body in the morning.

Children’s skin varies by age, by body area, and by how dry it is that week, so treat these as a starting point rather than a measurement. If skin still feels tacky or looks shiny several minutes later, use a little less next time. Comfortable skin, not coated skin, is what you are aiming for.

Yes. All three products are formulated for the face, the body, and the hands, which matters because eczema often appears first on the cheeks and around the mouth in babies.

Avoid contact with the eyes. These are for external use only.

If the skin on your child’s face is scratched or particularly irritated, the Barrier Nourishing Oil on its own is the gentlest choice until things settle.

Soon after the bath, once skin has been gently patted dry.

Pat rather than rub, and do not wait long. The minutes just after a bath are when a daily routine tends to do the most for sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

Short baths in warm rather than hot water tend to suit sensitive and eczema-prone skin better than long ones.

These are cosmetic products and are not meant to be eaten, but a small taste from hands or skin is not a cause for alarm.

Wipe the mouth and offer a drink of water. If your child swallows a larger amount, or you notice coughing, vomiting, or any reaction, contact your pediatrician or your local poison control center.

For babies who suck their fingers, applying to the hands last, or leaving the hands out altogether, reduces how much ends up in the mouth.

During an active flare, when skin is scratched or visibly irritated, pause the Serum and the Moisturizer. Use the Barrier Nourishing Oil alone, morning and evening, for five to seven days, until skin feels comforted and intact. Once skin has calmed, reintroduce the Serum first, then return to the Moisturizer in the morning. Read the full Flare Protocol →

Flaring skin is more sensitive and reactive than skin on a calm day, and on scratched or irritated areas even gentle actives can feel like too much. So during a flare the Ritual shifts to the Barrier Nourishing Oil on its own, the gentlest single product, to carry the skin through while it settles. Once skin has calmed, the Serum returns first, then the Moisturizer. This is by design: during a flare, the work is to nourish and support the barrier. Read the full Flare Protocol →

During a flare, skin is reactive and easily irritated, so the Ritual shifts to the Barrier Nourishing Oil on its own. An oil is the gentlest choice here for a simple reason: it has no water and none of the higher-strength actives that can sting or overwhelm irritated skin. What it does have is a blend of lipids, the fats skin uses to hold its barrier together, so it nourishes and comforts without asking anything of skin that is already working hard.

Sunflower Seed Oil leads the blend and is rich in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid skin uses to build its outer layer, so it helps replenish what a stressed barrier runs short on. Jojoba Seed Oil closely resembles the skin's own oil, so it settles in easily, softens, and helps slow water loss, while Squalane is a skin-identical lipid that slots into the barrier and helps seal moisture in. Baobab and Rice Bran Oils add nourishing fatty acids and antioxidants that keep skin supple and comfortable, and Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil brings oat's familiar calming quality to soothe the feeling of irritation. Vitamin E protects the oils and the skin from everyday oxidative stress, and a soothing active inspired by oat's own calming compounds helps skin settle.

Because every ingredient is chosen to nourish rather than challenge reactive skin, the Oil can carry skin through a flare, morning and evening, until it feels comforted and intact. Read the full Flare Protocol →

Section Five

Ingredients and formulation.

Yes. All three products are formulated without nut oils, fragrance, and steroids.

They are also formulated without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, petrolatum, mineral oil, synthetic dyes, drying alcohols, and animal-derived ingredients.

Every ingredient we use, and the reasoning behind each choice, is in the Ingredient Library. Open the Ingredient Library →

CalmSNAP Complexâ„¢ is our proprietary calming blend, found exclusively in the Barrier Boosting Serum. It combines Squalane, Niacinamide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil, and Panthenol, each chosen specifically for its ability to calm irritation and prepare the skin for the nourishment and protection that follow.

Oat is one of the most established, gentlest ingredients in sensitive skin care, and it appears across all three products in different forms. It helps calm the feeling of irritation and supports the skin's outer layer. In the Barrier Repair Moisturizer, finely milled oat also works as a gentle prebiotic, which means it helps support the skin's own natural balance of good bacteria, part of what keeps skin looking calm and comfortable.

Ceramides are fats that skin naturally makes to hold its outer layer together. Dry and eczema-prone skin often has fewer of them, which is part of why the barrier struggles. The Barrier Repair Moisturizer includes ceramides alongside cholesterol and phytosphingosine, the same family of fats skin uses to build itself, so it is replenishing what that skin tends to be short on and helping it hold moisture and stay comfortable.

Niacinamide, a well-studied form of vitamin B3, is in both the Serum and the Moisturizer. It supports the skin barrier, helps skin look calm and even, and helps skin hold onto moisture. It is one of the gentlest, most widely used supportive ingredients in modern skin care, which is why it earns a place in two of our three products.

Yes, that is part of how it is designed. Skin is home to a community of helpful microbes that, when balanced, help keep it calm and comfortable. Harsh, stripping products can disrupt that balance. The Ritual takes the opposite approach with gentle, barrier-supporting formulas and ingredients like finely milled oat that help support the skin's natural balance rather than strip it.

Think of them as two parts of one Ritual. The Barrier Boosting Serum comes first and is built around our CalmSNAP Complexâ„¢, chosen to calm the feeling of irritation and prepare skin to receive what follows. The Barrier Repair Moisturizer comes last as the richer, sealing layer, with ceramides and other skin-identical fats to replenish the barrier and hold everything in. The Serum calms and preps, the Moisturizer repairs and seals.

Section Six

About Brown Babee.

Resilience-First Skin Health™ is the philosophy behind Brown Babee. It is the belief that children’s care should build strength over time, not only respond to discomfort in the moment.

It begins with daily skin care, simple rituals that help sensitive and eczema-prone skin feel calm, supported, and protected. But resilience does not stop at the skin. A steady ritual can help caregivers feel more confident, help children experience care as something calm and consistent, and help families move from reaction into rhythm.

When care becomes consistent, it becomes something children can trust and families can carry forward. That is how resilience grows from the skin, to the home, to the community, and across generations.

Relief is a moment. Resilience is a ritual.

Yes. Every formula in the Ritual is vegan and cruelty-free.

The lipids and actives we use are plant-derived or synthesized, with no animal-sourced ingredients at any stage. We do not test on animals, and we do not ask anyone to test on our behalf.

Brown Babee products are made in small batches in Los Angeles, California.

Working in small batches lets us keep closer attention on the formulas, the process, and the standard we hold for children’s skin.
